CRITICALLY INJURED DRIVER AIRLIFTED AFTER SMASH AT MIDDLEMOUNT

A driver was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after a truck smash on the Fitzroy Development Road near Middlemount last night.

The semi-trailer driver was headed home from work when the truck is believed to have veered off the road and crashed into a tree about 240km south-west of Mackay.

In a marathon five-hour mission, RACQ CQ Rescue was tasked by Queensland Health about 8.30pm to fly direct to the accident site, not far from May Downs Road, but wind, dust and tall trees made landing nearby impossible.

The helicopter, with a doctor and Critical Care Paramedic on board, then diverted to Middlemount Airfield to meet the ambulance crew who transported the seriously injured patient by road.

The driver, believed to be in his 40s, suffered extensive internal injuries and required urgent medical intervention prior to and stabilisation for the flight to Mackay Base Hospital arriving about 11pm in a serious condition.
