DRIVER AIRLIFTED AFTER SMASH WITH TRUCK NEAR GLENDEN
A driver miraculously survived a horror collision with a turning semi-trailer near Glenden last night.
The Mackay woman had to be cut from the wreckage of the car by Queensland Fire and Rescue crews after the crash about 6.30pm on Collinsville Elphinstone Road and Perry Drive at Glenden.
RACQ CQ Rescue was enroute to a Moranbah for a hospital transfer when it was diverted by Queensland Health to Glenden, but was unable to land at the accident scene due to the truck being still on the road.
The helicopter crew decided to land at the Glenden heli pad, about one kilometre from the accident, and the doctor and Critical Care Paramedic on board were transferred to the scene by ambulance.
The driver was trapped in the wreckage for a short a period of time and once freed, she was treated by medical crews and transported by ambulance to the waiting helicopter. She was flown to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition with some internal injuries arriving just after 7pm.
The smash was the second of three taskings for the Mackay-based rescue helicopter yesterday.
Earlier in the afternoon some quick thinking and CPR skills helped save the life of an unlucky boatie. RACQ CQ Rescue was tasked by Queensland Health to fly 75km offshore to retrieve a person after a shallow water drowning incident near Penrith Island.
The patient, aged in their 40s, was on board a boat with 4 other people including two children, and had spent the day spear fishing and diving in the area when the incident occurred.
Those on the boat pulled the patient from the water and immediately performed CPR. RACQ CQ Rescue flew direct to the scene and after making contact with the boat involved, landed on an exposed shoreline on adjacent Three Rocks Island. The helicopter did not power down.
The patient, who was by then conscious but coughing up water and suffering serious pain, was transferred to the beach on the boat and loaded into the aircraft by the medical crew on a stretcher within 20 minutes.
The patient was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital for further treatment.
On Thursday and Friday, RACQ CQ Rescue completed six missions, including the transfer of a woman seriously injured in a fall from a horse near Lotus Creek as well as hospital transfers from Dysart, Collinsville and Moranbah.
