INJURED RIDER AIRLIFTED AFTER SLAMMING INTO TREE ON DIRT TRACK
A dirt bike rider suffered serious chest and head injuries after slamming into a tree near popular recreational area Captain’s Crossing on Saturday.
The car park at Teemburra Dam, about 65km west of Mackay, became a staging area for RACQ CQ Rescue as they attempted to extricate the seriously injured rider from an inaccessible part of the forest in a rescue which took about four hours.
The Mackay rider had been following a rough dirt trail from Eungella Dam through to Pinnacle with friends when the bike hit a large rock, flipping the rider over the handlebars. He slammed into a tree at approximately 60km an hour, his face and chest taking the brunt of the impact and suffered facial lacerations, chest injuries, a broken left femur and possible spinal injuries.
After being tasked by Queensland Health about midday, RACQ CQ Rescue flew up the Pioneer Valley to the car park at Teemburra Dam to offload the aircraft’s Stryker stretcher and reconfigure the cabin for a winch rescue. They then flew to the accident scene and a rescue crewman and paramedic were winched down to the bush track to render medical aid to the patient. The aircraft returned to the dam carpark to wait for word the trauma team was ready to winch.
About 50 minutes later once the patient was ready, RACQ CQ Rescue returned to the accident scene to hover about 10 metres overhead and winch up the paramedic and patient (in a stretcher) and then the rescue crewman into the aircraft.
The chopper then flew back to the dam carpark so the patient could be transferred to the (more comfortable) Stryker stretcher.
Once the rider was secured and the aircraft again reconfigured, Rescue 412 departed for the Mackay Base hospital with the patient in a stable condition, arriving about 4pm.
