INJURED DIRT BIKE RIDER WINCHED FROM CAPTAIN’S CROSSING
A dirt bike rider suffered rib injuries, fractures and potential spinal injuries and had to be winched from a popular trail riding area at Captain’s Crossing on Saturday.
RACQ CQ Rescue was tasked by Queensland Health about 9am on Saturday after a rider hit a rut at speed on the rough dirt track near Teemburra Dam, about 66km west of Mackay. The friends he was riding with called 000 immediately after the accident.
Due to the inaccessibility of the forest track, RACQ CQ Rescue was required to winch a rescue crewman and Critical Care Paramedic down into a clearing adjacent to the accident scene before landing at a nearby staging area.
The injured rider was treated and stabilised in the aircraft’s 406 (wire) stretcher before the ground crew radioed back to the helicopter at the staging they were ready for the winch retrieval. The paramedic accompanied the stretcher up on the winch into the helicopter followed by the rescue crewman before returning to the staging area to transfer the patient to the Stryker stretcher.
The helicopter did not shut down until it returned to base at Mackay Airport at 11.30am. The patient, believed to have been a resident of Dolphin Heads, was then transferred to Mackay Base Hospital by ambulance.
The airlift of the injured rider was one of six missions completed by the Mackay-based rescue helicopter since Friday. Other missions were transfers from Townsville, Collinsville, Bowen, Moranbah and Dysart.
