CREW EGG DRIVERS TO ADHERE TO SAFETY MESSAGE OVER EASTER

April 9, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Take the advice of the ‘eggs-perts’ this Easter – stay at home, stay off the road and away from others as much as you can.

During this unprecedented time in our country’s history, RACQ CQ Rescue pilot Doug White is urging residents across the region to not become complacent this Easter and to adhere to the important social distancing rules now in place across the state.

Mr White said every ‘bunny’ loved the long weekend and traditionally it was a very busy time on the region’s road with many travelling.

With less cars on the road this Easter due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, he said the rescue helicopter crew were looking forward to seeing a drop in the number of accidents attended as people adhered to the ‘stay at home and away from others’ advice.

“Last year RACQ CQ Recue airlifted 34 people as a result of injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents,” Mr White said.

“Since January, CQ Rescue has completed 118 missions, seven of which were people injured in serious motor vehicle accidents so it’s obvious the fatal five message, particularly fatigue, speeding and distracted driving, is still playing a large part in road accidents and subsequent severe injury in this region.”

With the long weekend ahead, the Mackay-based rescue helicopter service is encouraging residents to follow the two-person social gathering limit and importantly, to understand that this restriction also extends to vehicles on the road.

“Please stay home this Easter long weekend unless it’s absolutely essential and stay away from others as much as you can,” Mr White said.

“Please be assured our crew and aeromedical will be available 24/7 to anyone, anywhere at anytime though if you need us over Easter.”

RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith reminded drivers all road trips were off, unless for essential travel.

“This Easter long weekend we want to see empty roads,” Ms Smith said.

“If you do have to drive for an essential purpose, it should only be yourself and one other passenger in a car, or a group of passengers from the same household.”
